Ian Plowman - Meetings Without Discusion
Have you ever attended a meeting where there was no clear agenda or people got off track, where one or two people dominated, where no decisions were made and where you wondered if you wanted to attend the next meeting? Would you like to attend a meeting where none of the above occurred? Well, the good news is that there is a better way, built around a series of concepts known as “Meetings without Discussion®”. The concept might seem an impossibility, a contradiction in terms but after you have been exposed to it, you will regard it as possibly the most effective way to conduct a meeting. Presented by Ian Plowman.

The Carrolup Artists
The Carrolup school of landscape art originated from the work of a group of child artists living at the Carrolup Native Settlement (now Marribank Mission Farm) near Katanning in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Aged between 8 and 14 years, the children were members of the “stolen generation” and developed a unique style of painting that continues in the work of Noongar artists today. For many Noongar people in the Great Southern, Carrolup is remembered with mixed emotions. For some the settlement provided a safe house and training for a new generation of artists. For others it was tantamount to a prison with little or no respect for Noongar culture or traditions. Ezzard Flowers and Athol Farmer will tell the story of their art.

Lynley Pickett and Jaime Phillips first met at the WA Community Leadership Program in 2003. They have since joined forces to build self belief and wider understanding amongst Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. They feel that relationships of trust and cultural understanding are essential to the future of Western Australia's regional communities. Lynley and Jaime designed and delivered the acclaimed Wearable Art Program, which targeted 20 young Noongar women and their community. It was a collaborative program that began with the knowledge of Elders, and branched out into fashion design based on Noongar stories. As the program gained momentum, there were generous inputs from other cultures, including Muslim women, farmers, models and teachers. Jon believes that nature spent millenniums creating diversity for a purpose, and it is now time for us to nurture our nature.

Young People and the Arts
Since the launch of the State Government's Young People and the Arts Policy and Program in 1997 the lives of young people have changed considerably. 10 years ago nobody knew what a blogger, a My Space page or a VJ was, and hybrid arts practice and digital media was not at the forefront of youth arts practice. This forum is for artists, artsworkers, arts organisations, community groups and local government who engage with young people to have a say on what is important to them now. Discussion will be facilitated by Propelarts and Elizabeth Spencer of the Department of Culture and the Arts.
