The venue for the conference is the stunning Denmark Agricultural College 2 kms from the town centre. Nestled in the hills of the farmlands that surround it, this rammed earth and corrugated iron building is on a 560 hectare farm that supports beef and dairy cattle, sheep for meat and wool, pigs, poultry, production horticulture, plantation forestry, aquaculture and a vineyard encompassing viticulture and winemaking opportunities. The College is an ideal conference venue with many break out rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, in-house chefs and a gorgeous view.
Pounded by the vast Southern Ocean, fringed with dramatic cliffs, unspoiled coves and steeped in the history of early European settlement, the Great Southern region is a fascinating mix of coastline that gives way to rolling pastoral land, mountain ranges, wine regions and an abundant array of flora and fauna. The waters are rich with marine life including dolphins, sea lions, penguins and whales. Moving inland, winding rivers and streams cross this picturesque vista of classic Australian farming country and the region's rural heritage is characterised by a host of pioneering farming communities. The interior offers a feast of awesome views and delicately flavoured wines and the countryside around Mount Barker, Frankland and the Porongurup National Park is rapidly becoming one of Western Australia's premier wine regions. The Great Southern region has a diverse and vibrant artistic community. It is also home to WA's only full-time regional performing arts company, Southern Edge Arts.
The Great Southern has an Aboriginal population of around 1700 who make up 3.2% of the region's total population. The majority of Aboriginal people in the region identify as Noongar and live in the Albany, Katanning, Gnowangerup, Tambellup and Plantagenet (Mt Barker) local government areas. The popularity of local Noongar art is growing and a marketing network is being established.
